Overview of Search Results Display
When searching in ScreenSteps, you may notice that fewer than 10 results appear on a page, even if there are more than 10 matching articles in total. This behavior is related to how the system handles duplicate articles known as "alias articles."
- Search results may show fewer than 10 items per page due to result aggregation.
- Links to additional pages are provided to access all results.
Key Terms
Alias Articles: These are duplicate versions of an article that appear in multiple manuals or locations within your account. Each alias is technically a separate result in the search.
- Alias articles allow the same content to appear in different contexts.
- Each alias is counted as a separate result before aggregation.
How Search Result Aggregation Works
ScreenSteps aggregates duplicate alias articles into a single search result. Instead of showing each alias separately, the system displays one result with links to each manual or location where the article appears. This aggregation can reduce the number of visible results on a page.
- Duplicate alias articles are combined into one result.
- Links under each result show all locations for that article.
- This aggregation can make the number of results per page appear lower than expected.
Why It Matters
Understanding this behavior helps set expectations for how search results are displayed and explains why you may see fewer than the expected number of results per page. There is currently no workaround for this behavior except to avoid using alias articles.
- Result aggregation improves clarity by avoiding duplicate listings.
- The number of visible results may be less than the actual number of matches due to de-duplication.
